The daughter of psychotherapist Linda Carroll and Grateful Dead devotee and first manager Hank Harrison, Courtney Love is an American singer, guitarist, songwriter and an actress.
She began her professional film career in 1986 after catching the attention of the film director Alex Cox who gave her a supporting role in Sid and Nancy (1986). Love passion in acting drove her to take some acting lessons at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1984 which made her appear in one of the short films of Kuchar’s, Cox and Andy Warhol such as Straight to Hell (1987), Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes and I Wanna Be Sedated. After several short films, roles in the late 1980’s Love decided to abort her acting career and focus more on music.
Though film wasn’t much in her DNA since music was what she pursued most, her success in her music career as the frontwoman of one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the 1990s and 2000’s that’s the Hole made her receive intermittent roles in films.
The first supporting role she secured was in the biopic Basquiat and the drama Feeling Minnesota released in 1996. What followed was the role of Larry Flynt’s wife in Milos Forman’s 1996 biopic The Peoples vs. Larry Flynt which earned her a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress as well as other accolades from New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Chicago critics associations. Later she would appear on the cast in 2000 Cigarettes (1998), and she also starred in Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon (1999.) alongside Jim Carrey. During this period, she also appeared on short films such as Beat (2000), Ghosts of Mars (2001), Julie Johnson (2001) and Trapped (2002). For her work at Julie Johnson (2001) film, she received an award for Best Actress at L.A.’s gay and lesbian Outfest.
In 2003 after Hole broke up and Love took supporting roles in films which some of them were commercially unsuccessful her rocky past, and drug addiction problem caught up with her, sending her through a whirlwind of never-ending legal battles and health-related complications.
Love returned to acting in 2014 when she joined the cast of FX series Sons of Anarchy which also marked her debut role in television series. Since then she has appeared in numerous television shows among them being Empire (2015), Revenge (2015), RuPaul’s Drag Race 2017 among other appearances. Love has also appeared in several documentary films and numerous music videos.
